Crafts Made in West Virginia Have Local Appeal | March 2009 |
More and more people are realizing the benefits of supporting local business owners and buying local things to sustain their local economy. All the steps that had been moving the US towards a "global economy" are starting to blow up in our faces and the economy is at its worst point in decades. The fact that people are waking up and starting to do something about it is very good news for crafters in West Virginia as it makes selling their hand-made arts and crafts even easier than before. An easily visible and prominent "Made in West Virginia" tag can mean all the difference when it comes to selling your crafts items in West Virginia these days. People have been looking to buy local when it comes to fresh produce, but the movement is creeping into just about every aspect of business these days including crafts in Virginia. Almost everything, from food to clothing to home furnishings, can be bought from "Made in West Virginia" companies and those that you can't find there can be purchased from local merchants who help keep a larger part of the profit right in the local community as opposed to a chain retailer. People in West Virginia aren't the only ones who will be more likely to buy your crafts, either. Most tourists would much rather have a genuine article made in West Virginia than some trinket stamped with the words "West Virginia" when it has actually been made in China. This gives you a whole new market to sell your hand-made crafts in. Be sure to capture the local flavor and include something that reminds the buyer that it is surely a local product, carrying the culture or flavor of the state. You can make a good income selling these items to local gift shops. It is a great thing if you can make money through selling crafts and the new trend of buying local makes it even better for crafters in West Virginia. If you are already running a crafting business in West Virginia, this isn't news to you, but if you are just thinking about it, then come on in because the water's fine.
I have just opened an Etsy shop about 6 months ago. I live in West Virginia and I have only a few customers from here. I would like to get the word around about my unique shop. Every since I was young I had a fascination with gemstones and when I got my first gem I decided to wire wrap it by watching a utube video. It took a few tries but then that’s where my shop began. Once I got the wire wrapping down I started to make tree of life’s out of wire and chip beads and then my whole line of WiccAngela jewelry collection was created. I add new items almost failing and weekly onto my Etsy shop. I love crafting and I would like to know more about how I can get other West Virginians find my shop.
