Photograph Your Georgia-made Crafts for Online Sales

March 2009

If you are a crafter in Georgia looking to start selling your crafts online, it is vital that you learn how to properly photograph your craft creations. A good photograph marks the difference between selling your crafts and having potential customers click away to find these items somewhere else. Of course, a good website design and good written content on your site are also important, but nothing is more important than good photographs of your crafts for getting them sold. The same tips apply to selling your crafts on auction sites like eBay or using free online classified ads. The following points are sure to help you. • The first thing you will need is a high-quality digital camera (aim for at least 5 megapixels), preferably, one that allows for manual adjustments of the aperture and shutter speed. • You will need a tripod stand in order to properly photograph your crafts. This makes sure that the camera stays steady and you don't end up with a blurry photo. • The best lighting is actually natural sunlight. Many people make the mistake of using too much light and this actually decreases the quality of the photos. Weather permitting, you may wish to set up a table outside on sunny days in Georgia. Otherwise you must use some good lamps or special lights from the camera store (if you are going to make this a full-time endeavor this may be worth considering). • You will want to create a nice backdrop for your crafts with a solid colored sheet or tablecloth. You can provide a nice contrast by photographing light colored crafts on a dark background and dark colored crafts on a light background. This will help the details of your crafts to come through more clearly. • Next, create a display on your table with your crafts. You may wish to place boxes or plastic riser under the cloth on the table to give your craft a platform; it really depends on the craft item you are photographing. The most convenient thing about using a digital camera is that you can immediately load the pictures on your computer and make any adjustments needed before disassembling your display. A great picture is worth more than a thousand words, it's worth some cold hard cash when it comes to selling your crafts online.
