Starting a Crafting Business in North Dakota

March 2009

While the rest of the country is suffering from a declining economy, things in North Dakota look pretty good still. North Dakota has the second lowest unemployment rate in the country and if you are looking to start your own crafting business that is an excellent piece of news for you. There are numerous crafts that are pleasant to make and easy to sell. Finding the right craft for you and the market at your local craft fairs in North Dakota is half the battle. There are a number of crafting magazines, websites and books that you can read to give you some ideas and inspiration, and from there you will need to rely on your own creativity and personal expression to create something unique that people will love.

In order to get your business off the ground without going broke, you will have to look for craft ideas that aren't too expensive to make in the beginning. Most people starting a crafting business for the first time are likely to have a somewhat limited budget. If you can find crafts that use some recycled materials like soup cans or yogurt containers, you will be saving money and helping the environment at the same time. Consumers these days prefer "green" crafts such as these because they can feel good when they buy them. That is an indirect benefit to you and so you can start off your business without too much initial expense. As you sell your first crafts you will create more cash flow that you can invest in new tools and materials to create more crafts as you go.

Next, you will need to learn the basics of running a small business. You certainly will encounter some expenses in getting your new business started, but the good news is that a lot of your expenses will be tax deductible. Even better than that, there are numerous other deductions you get for running a small business out of your home, like being able to claim some of your utilities and sometimes even a portion of your rent or house payment.

Learning how to price your crafts is another important part of starting a crafting business in North Dakota. You need to be sure that you have taken into consideration all of the expenses involved in creating your crafts, including materials, time and marketing costs (craft show booth fees, etc.). You must also ensure that your crafts are priced competitively so that they will sell well, because you won't make any profit at all if you don't sell any crafts.

Starting a crafting business in North Dakota is a great way to make extra money while doing something that you really enjoy. Some people make their entire living with crafting and this may be something to consider as you learn the basics and gain experience. Crafting can be both fun and profitable, so take the time to research good craft ideas and basic small business operation and then jump in with both feet.
